General Responsibilities

To repair uniforms, linens, blankets, duvet covers, sheets, drapery, upholstery, towels and table clots to assure proper fit and maintain good condition consistent with The Kahala Hotel & Resort’s high standards of quality. Also, to maintain uniform inventories (ie. Issue/order) and to provide clothing alteration services for guests and employees.

Specific Duties

•Receives and issues all uniforms and maintain uniform control. Takes body measurements and sizes; alters uniforms accordingly. Stores old uniforms until otherwise directed by supervisor.

•Repairs/mends and visually inspects various linens and uniforms (including bulky/heavy duvet coverts, upholstery and drapes) using industrial sewing machine. Requires the ability to lift items weighing up to 25 lbs.

•Maintains inventory and control of all uniforms by recording and updating uniform cards. Manually sews buttons and performs detailed repair. Cleans and maintains equipment and tools to ensure proper working order.

•Sew various inventory items as needed such as, but not limited to pillowslips and, food and beverage cocktail napkins and cleaning rags. Drafts and fabricates special function items, other household items, and sample uniforms.
•Report all suspicious persons or activities and hazardous or unsafe conditions to the Security Department.

•Assures proper issuance and distribution of employee uniforms in the absence of Uniform Room Attendant when requested or to relieve during meal breaks.

•Provides garment alteration work upon request of the guest.

•Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.

Specific Job Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

•Ability to perform simple mathematical functions to control the uniform inventory.

•Ability to concentrate and perform in a hot and noisy environment.

•Ability to handle and cope with complaints and comments from guests.

•Ability to work with various equipment, such as, but not limited to, telephones, copy machine, 10-key adding machine, hand tools, ladders, and various sewing machines.

•Ability to perform basic operations on a sewing machine, patching machine, surge machine, steam presser and household irons.

•Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

•Visual ability and manual dexterity to perform detailed repair work.

•Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language sufficient to communicate pleasantly and effectively with employees, staff and guests via the telephone, and/or in person. This involves listening to the nature of the concern, demonstrating empathy with the customer and providing positive and proactive solutions.

•Ability to work varying shifts and maintain attendance in accordance with the hotel’s attendance policy.

•Ability to comply with all hotel rules and regulations including polices regarding safety and grooming standards.

Experience

•Previous Seamstress experience preferred.

•Garment Fabrication Training required

•Experience in sewing, tailoring, inventory control and system required

Licenses or Certification

•Certification of tuberculosis clearance certification required.

•CPR and Standard First Aid Certification preferred.

•Ability to complete HAZCOM/MSDS Training preferred.

•Ability to complete Blood Borne Pathogen Training preferred.

Physical Requirements

•Ability to push and/or pull equipment, linen, supplies, drapery, fabrics, upholstery, uniforms and household items weighing up to 300 lbs.

•Ability to grasp, lift and/or carry a maximum of 25 lbs.

•Ability to reach, bend, stoop, walk, to retrieve and re-file various supplies, uniforms, fabric, etc. at level up to 6 feet high.

•Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time.

•Ability to move throughout the work area while performing the essential job functions.
